The medical metaphor holds true for design. You really do have to have a good bedside manner, be a good listener, ask the right questions and really attend to the person you’re working with in order to figure out where the answer is going to lie. It’s fun when they’re really sick.
On this episode of People of Purpose, Johanna speaks to Michael Beirut about his early career years at Vignelli Associates, life at Pentagram and the secrets from his 86 notebooks – including “love is the answer.” Michael shares his thoughts on what it means to write and how New York has shaped him as a designer and as a person.
Michael is a leading designer based in New York. Originally from Ohio, he made his move to the city after graduating and accepting a job with Vignelli Associates, under the tutelage of famed designers, (the now late) Massimo Vignelli and his wife Lella.
Michael is a partner and Pentagram and co-founder of the much loved and well-followed industry blog, Design Observer. He is a published author on the discipline of design and is a senior critic in graphic design at the Yale School of Art.
He is highly regarded in the industry, not just for his talent and insight, but for his humility and wisdom.
