Meditation is an approach to training the mind and has been scientifically proven to increase resilience, improve health and reduce stress – although its true purpose goes well beyond these benefits.
There are many approaches to meditation including concentration on the breath, mantra or an object; mindfulness or awareness; the cultivation of compassion and moving meditation.
If relaxation is not the primary goal – it is often one of its most useful effects. Studies have shown that meditation helps invoke the “relaxation response,” which has been connected to a reduction in the activity of the sympathetic nervous system (the stress response). An over-stressed body experiences an “allostatic load” (wear and tear on the body) and has been linked to all manner of illnesses.
But while meditation is linked to improved health, lower stress levels and increased resilience, it is worth repeating that the great goal of meditation is no goal, it is simply to be present.
